This airport and Cusco Airport are the main air hubs in southern Peru. This air terminal has grown fast in number of passengers; from 593,038 passengers in 2009, to a record of 1'148,838 passengers in 2012. It is the main air gateway for tourists visiting the city of Arequipa, nearby ruins, and the Colca Canyon, the world's second deepest canyon (after Cotahuasi Canyon, also located in Arequipa). The facilities have been modernized and the installation of two boarding jetbridges and the expansion of the main hall, are among the works that were carried out. The airport is truly international because of the flights to and from La Paz, Bolivia. Arequipa, had till recently, apart from the mentioned international flights to and from La Paz, also direct flights to Chile, and maybe in the near future those flights will be operated once again (to Arica and Santiago).
